Definition and Examples of a Fortiori
An argument in which a rhetor reaches a conclusion by first setting up two possibilities, one of which is more probable than the other. Whatever can be affirmed about the less probable can be affirmed with even greater force about the more probable. Etymology From the Latin, from the stronger Examples and Observations Remember the commercial for Life Cereal, the one where the brothers experiment on picky little Mikey? If Mikey liked it, the boys figured, anyone would. Thats an argument a fortiori: If something less likely is true, then something more likely will probably be true as well.(Jay Heinrich, If Bill Had Great Interns, Then Hillary . . . Figures of Speech Served Fresh, August 1, 2005) The concept underlying this phrase can be illustrated thus: if you do not trust your child to safely operate a bicycle, then a fortiori, you do not trust him to operate an automobile. This with stronger reason argument implies a comparison of values. The argument is grounded on the common sense (and logical) convention that within the same category the greater includes the lesser (or, if you will, the stronger includes the weaker). Do not let the use of the word includes mislead you. Because one person is taller than another does not mean the other is included within the one. The comparison is not between physical things, but between the relative values of actions, relationships, principles, or rules. When you make or analyze this type of argument, do not mix apples and oranges. The comparison should be one of factually like things and be factually meaningful. The objects of the comparison must share essential factual elements if they are to be of like kind. You may not trust your chi ld to operate a bicycle safely, but that does not necessarily mean that he cannot be trusted to bring in the groceries.(Ron Villanova, Legal Methods: A Guide for Paralegals and Law Students. Llumina Press, 1999) It is an argument a fortiori, from the stronger. If I show you that two is less than ten then it is easy to persuade you a fortiori that two is less than twenty. If I show you that what you think is a burden of the welfare state is actually small, or badly estimated, or a benefit, then it is less difficult to persuade you that rolling back the welfare state requires sober thinking about the alternatives.(Stephen Ziliak, review of The Economic Consequences of Rolling Back the Welfare State. Journal of Economic Literature, March 2001) I feel that it is my civic duty to pay my taxes as well as my other bills, and that it is my moral duty to make an honest declaration of my income to the income tax authorities. But I do not feel that I and my fellow citizens have a religious duty to sacrifice our lives in war on behalf of our own state, and, a fortiori, I do not feel that we have an obligation or a right to kill and maim citizens of other states or to devastate their land.(Arnold Toynbee) Pronunciation: a-FOR-tee-OR-ee

Corporate Social Responsebility Business Embark
Question: Describe about the Corporate Social Responsebility for Business Embark. Answer: Corporate social responsibility is a standard business practice that contemporary businesses embark on to make a statement in todays world and remain competitive. Commonly referred to as corporate responsibility, ethics or accountability, CSR refers to the manner in which companies integrate social and environmental concerns into the operations and running of their business which inevitably leads to transparency and improvement of the society as well as wealth creation for the company (McWilliams, 2000).For corporations that practice it, the major reason is to create an indelible impact on the society and the benefits reverberate back to the director of the corporation and all other stakeholders. It is no wonder then that companies that practice CSR strategies have higher levels of customer satisfaction due to the high standards of customer service, and they also perform better in the market. The idea of benefit the society in one way or another is important to any corporation since it means that the reputation of the company is at stake with the clients, shareholders ,suppliers, NGOs , employees and the community (McWilliams, 2000). According to Aguinis and Glavas, (2012) a corporate social responsibility strategy should engage stakeholders in impacting the society with the business, save cost and take advantage of available opportunities in the market. To do this efficiently he argues that all stakeholders have to be engaged and planning is key to the process. Some companies that are not keen on CSR policies and strategies claim that the shareholders should be the only ones benefit from the enterprise, forgetting that sustainability in the market is important for all corporations. CSR is important in this regard to show the public that they are valuable, they are transparent to the public and that employees are not neglected in the bid to make profits. Consequently, corporate social responsibility ensures business for the corporations that practice it, is sustained. In the short term, Lindgreen and Swaen, (2010) says that CSR aims to deliver profits through revenues generated, satisfied and occupied employees and low capital constraints even though many business critics are opposed to this idea. According to him, long term benefits of CSR are more beneficial to a corporation than short term. In the long term, such policies impact on the culture of the firm, innovation and other business changes that ensure sustainability in the future. CSR therefore has an objective to benefit the society while benefit shareholders and stakeholders of a corporation. Another importance of CSR is to create and maintain the corporations reputation and image in the eyes of the public through minding the community besides making profits. CSR efforts by a company can endear the company to people (Fisher, 2014). This is in regard to what the firm does to benefit the community. The overall effect is that the treatment a firm gives the public translates to sales, investors ,return customers , high employee engagement since people want to work there and referrals and recommendations by customers to other potential customers. Public image is important to a corporation since studies have shown that firms that practice it perform better and they access acquisitions more easily than those who do not. Lastly, they also influence policy makers and their decisions since thy benefit everyone around them (Navi, 2012) Advantages of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) for corporations It is clear that the advent of social media has given the masses a voice through which they talk about ethics of businesses and though it many organizations have been accounting for any activities they do. One of the benefits of corporate social responsibility is that it brings in new business and retains the ones that the firm already has. The reason this happens is because humans are naturally inclined to be where they feel appreciated and therefore a company that seems to focus more on the society than its profits, is more likely to attract customers, and build more networks than one that is profit oriented (Aguinis and Glavas, 2012). Consequently, the reputation of the business improves. In the same breath, another benefit is that employees are happy to work in such a positive environment, and thus, they will not leave unless in retirement as employees feel loyal. The corporation also benefits from investors who want to invest and fund the activities of the corporation as a resul t of CSR policies. In addition, a corporation sets itself apart from its competitors through CSR especially when the other firms do not practice it since all stakeholders, shareholders and the public want to be associated with the corporation (Hopkins, 2012). The media also tends to favor corporations that practice CSR due to its ethical implications. Positive publicity is always beneficial to a company. Lastly, in the running of the corporation, it benefits by saving on operational costs through reducing emissions that destroy the environment and risk management of reputation. It also allows for innovation and room for new technologies and learning opportunities since the corporation develops new products from wider scope of business through CSR. Disadvantages of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) for corporations There are many reasons why corporate social responsibility is deemed as a loss for corporations. According to Becchetti et al (2012).One of these is that for small corporations that are struggling to succeed financially, social responsibility is a costly activity since the attitude towards CSR is that it is charity that does not add value to the corporation. In addition, CSR strategies reduce competitiveness between small to medium enterprises. The additional costs in environmental programs and reduction in emission will cost more and thus smaller corporations prefer to back out and thus stop competing due to CSR. Thirdly, when companies practice CSR they have to consider the opinion of shareholders before embarking on it and they might be opposed to it due to the involved costs. In conclusion, there are many companies that owe their success to corporate social responsibility. One of these is Nike which has seen a rise in sales and loyalty due to implementing CSR in their operations. This shows that regardless of the conditions put on the brain, it is likely to continue with what it was meant to achieve. Experiments on animals have been conducted to test the effects of nature and nurture on the brain. An experiment on rats tested whether or not experience effects brain development. The study raised a group of rats with friends in a lively environment while isolating some. The isolated rats had smaller brains then the rats with friends. Another experiment was conducted on ferrets to see if the part of the brain meant of vision, the occipital lobe, was the only place vision could take place. A scientist rewired the brains of ferrets so that visual signals were sent to the temporal lobe instead of the occipital lobe. The result was that these ferrets had 20/60 vision; they could see. This proved that nurture can change brain development, but only to a certain extent; the ferrets did not have perfect, 20/20, vision. Nature and nurture work together in forming an individual. All aspects of life, from prenatal brain development to surgeries that may remove parts of the brain, are formed through both nature and nurture. It is the plasticity of the brain that allows these two things to work together.

EMULSIFICATION AND DIGESTION OF LIPIDS BY BILE AND LIPASE Essays
EMULSIFICATION AND DIGESTION OF LIPIDS BY BILE AND LIPASE Essays NAME: CLASS : DBT 4A DATE SUBMITTED : 14 AUG 2015 EXPERIMENT 3:EMULSIFICATION AND DIGESTION OF LIPIDS BY BILE AND LIPASE (VIRTUAL) INTRODUCTION Lipase is a type of enzyme known as a hydrolase and is responsible for catalysing the hydrolysis of triglycerides (the substrate) into fatty acids and glycerol. It is referred to as a hydrolase because the reaction that it catalyses is a hydrolysis reaction in which large molecules are broken down into smaller ones with the addition of water. Lipase is a subclass of the esterases. Lipases usually involves in the digestion, transport and processing of dietary lipids in living organisms. Lipase is primarily produced in the pancreas, but is also in the mouth and stomach. Most people produce enough pancreatic lipase. But people with some disease such as cystic fibrosis and celiac disease may not have enough lipase to get the nutrition they need from food. As I had mentioned before, lipase catalyzes the breakdown of lipids by hydrolyzing the esters of fatty acids. Its function is important for the digestion and promoting absorption of fats in the intestines. Reaction of the lipase enzyme can be summarized as : Lipase Lipids Fatty acids + Glycerol This experiment was carried out to study the effect of temperature on rate of lipases activity of digesting fat into fatty acid and glycerol using a pH probe. The rate of lipases activity is the measure of how fast the lipase enzyme can catalyze the procedure of breaking down the lipid into triglyceride and fatty acids, causing the pH to decrease. Enzymes are sensitive to heat so does lipase. Lipase can be denatured by high temperature and extremes of pH. Both high temperature and extremes of pH change the bonds between amino acids in the enzyme, so changing its shape. This could stop the action of lipase. Addition of bile helps the action of lipase by promoting emulsification, allowing the lipid to mix more readily and reach the active sites of the enzyme more easily, speeding up the lipid digestion in the process. PROCEDURES 1. Laber three test tubes 1 - 3. 2. Using a graduated pipette, place 5ml of milk into each test tube. 3. Then pipette 7ml of sodium carbonate solution into each test tube. 4. Pipette 1ml of 3% bile salts solution into test tubes 2 and 3. 5. Using a pipette, add 1ml of phenolphthalein solution to each tube until the mixtures are bright pink. 6. With the graduated pipette, place 1ml of lipase into tubes 1 and 3. 7. Add boiled lipase in test tube 2. Lipase should be added into each tube at the same time. Shake the tubes well so that the contents would mix. 8. Record the time taken for the contents in each test tube to change color from pink to white. RESULTS Lipid Digestion Data Action of lipase on milk Tube All three tubes contain milk, sodium carbonate and phenolphthalein and:Time taken to change from pink to white 1Lipase onlySlow 2Boiled lipase and bile saltsNo changes 3Lipase and bile saltsFast DISCUSSION The purpose of this experiment is to investigate the effect of temperature on the breakdown of lipid by the help of bile. Action of lipase on milk was tested using substances such sodium carbonate, an alkali, phenolphthalein which is an indicator and milk that contains fats. Test tube 1 is the control where only bile salt is not used. The result shows the actual time lipase takes to break down ordinary fats. Time taken for the test tube 1 to change color from pink to white is slower compared to others. This is because lipase breaks down the lipids into fatty acids and glycerol in a slower manner. Presence of fatty acids into the tube neutralised sodium carbonate and reduced the pH. So, the color of mixture in tube 1 is changed to white. Test tube 2 is used to show the denaturing effect of heat on lipase. High temperature destroyed the lipases structure, which in turn prevents its action. Boiled lipase was denatured due to the high temperature. This means that no fats are converted, e ven in the presence of bile salts. Thus, there is no changes in pH and the color of the mixture. Test tube 3 is a similar situation as occurs in our bodies. Lipase and bile

Outline and critique the main themes in martin luther kings Jr.s Essay
Outline and critique the main themes in martin luther kings Jr.s theology. can it inspire the contemporay church to be a 'voice of conscience' in society today - Essay Example Other than the colored church traditions, King sought from other intellectual sources to back up his noble course of liberating his people from oppression. National and international public figures like Mahatma Gandhi and Thoreau inspired him with their individual philosophies. He borrowed the nonaggressive protest tradition that the two advocated. He also gave secular interactionism a chance, alongside protestant liberalism in an attempt to have in place a harmonized approach of theology amid struggle for equality. Itââ¬â¢s apparent that the key hindrance to Martin King talented theologian is the narrow, shallow, elitist, and racist definition of theology. These flaws restricts its methods and subject matter to problems and issues that other races tend to identify. King at all times steered from the front. He passionately sought to transform all the forms of oppression in his society. He aspired to establish a fair and a nondiscriminatory society. Thus, it is possible to analyze his involvement with such events as the famous successful Montgomery bus boycott (1953-56). In addition to the defeat in Albany (1961), the Birmingham demonstrations(1963), the Sejma March for goring rights (1965) and his encounter with racism in Chicago (1966). Moreover, Kings had dialogue with black power advocates during and after the Meredith Mississippi March (1966). He arranged the preparation for Poor Peoples March on Washington (1967), had a stand against the Vietnam War (1967-68), and had his last march with garbage workers in Memphis (1968). Martin King was keen not to restrict his theological pursuit to the afflictions of one minority group. As much as his initial drive was motivated by the oppression of the black, his theological vision was diverse and in fact, universal. He targeted the entire humanity as he thought of the brown Vietnamese

Boxing culture Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Boxing culture - Research Paper Example Boxing goes as far back as the second and third millennium BC. Archaeologists have found drawings and tablets that suggest that fist fighting was something that begun a long time ago, it may not have been as sophisticated as it is right now, and usually they would result in dangerous and deadly battles. Homerââ¬â¢s Iliad gives a good depiction of a possibly early era boxing fight. He writes it in the Mycenaean era and sometimes they would beat each other with fists until one of them died. (Fleischer) The very first ever boxing match was documented in 1681 and it took place in Britain. This happened when the Duke of Albemarle initiated a fight between his own butler and butcher and offered a prize to the winner. After a few years, boxing began to grow. All over England, matches were held. Years later, a match resulted to an opponent being killed, and this prompted a man known as Jack Boughton to develop the very first set of rules and had them published in 1743. There were twelve p rominent rules and this was when wearing of gloves was first brought in. This is where the knockout rule came about that stated that if a man was down and couldnââ¬â¢t continue for thirty seconds, then the fight was over. Broughtonââ¬â¢s rules had the welfare of the players in mind. Because of his contribution, he is considered ââ¬Å"the Father of Boxingâ⬠. The point where boxing really began to revolutionize was in 1865 when John Sholto Douglass, the Eighth Marquess of Queensberry wrote new boxing rules that basically transformed the sport to what it is today. In these new rules, he introduced the time of three minutes per round. He also made the wearing of gloves mandatory and prohibited wrestling during the match. These rules really kicked in when James Corbett defeated John Sullivan with the new established rules. He was the first world heavyweight champion under the Queensberry rules. It was in the early 19th century that boxing was first included in the St. Louis O lympic Games. Beginning with that, many talented fighters all over the world began flocking and they would fight for titles. This went on, really well into the 21st century. In 1927, the National Boxing Association (NBA) was formed. This was the very first authorization body to oversee the sport. The main goal of the NBA was to get talented boxers together to fight, to make sure there were no ethical problems, and to make the sport even more popular than it was at the time. Today, there are three governing bodies over boxing. They are the World Boxing Council (WBC), International Boxing Federation (IBF), and the World Boxing Association (WBA). (Fox) Today, the Marquis of Queensberry rules are still being used. Some of the rules include that there should be up to three judges at ringside to score the game. Each boxer is also assigned a ring corner where he will take breaks, and enter in at. Another general rule of boxing is that hitting below the belt, biting, pushing or any of the l ike is prohibited. To avoid this, the boxer should have his shorts pulled up so as to not hit the genitals. A boxer cannot hold the ropes for support while he is punching or drop anywhere below the waist of the opponent while punching.

AlfredMarshall Essay Example for Free
AlfredMarshall Essay Supply and Demand Simulation ECO/365 March 10, 2014 Ed Hartmann, D. B. A Supply and Demand Simulation Microeconomics and Macroeconomics In the simulation the supply and demand was affected due to the decreasing of the rent in order to lower the vacancy percentage and increase the revenue for the rental company. This is thought of as a temporary fix on a month to month lease basis and provides us with a good example of what microeconomics is. When a new company decided to move into town and increase the population as well as increase the number of jobs provides us with another good example of microeconomics. Because the population increased and the jobs increased means the rental rates are increased as well in order to respond to the increase in demand. The simulation also showed that people who were working in Atlantis were living in cities outside of town because the rent was less there, this is an example of macroeconomics. The government decided to take control of the situation by putting a ceiling of $1550 per month for a 2 bedroom apartment in order for middle class families to be able to afford to live within the city that they work in which is another example of macroeconomics. Because of the ceiling being put on the rental properties it caused the rental company to only rent a portion of their apartments so that they would be able to make some sort of profit because of the cost of maintenance. Shift of Supply and Demand Curve The simulation showed us that when the new company moved into town increasing the population the supply curve shifted down because the supply of the two-bedroom apartments ended up decreasing. Because the population grew within the town the demand curve increased. Analyzing the Shift When the increase in demand occurs this means that the quantity demand is larger than the quantity supplied from the initial equilibrium, which also means that there is a temporary shortage in the market. When the company increased the rental rate due to the demand increasing, the quantity demand decreased and the quantity supplied increased, in return there was a reduction shortage that occurred. The company will have to continue to make adjustments until the equilibrium is met between the new demand curve and the initial supply curve. When the company reached a new equilibrium, the rental rate was higher than it was before, and therefore the number of apartments that were demanded and supplied were increased (University of Phoenix, 2003). Applying What We Learned In Our Workplace Supply and demand in my workplace is based on our customers and what they require. One of our biggest customers is the government mainly the military. For our company when our country is not at war or protecting another country then the demand for our product is low. The demand for our products helps other areas such as law enforcement but the government holds most of the demand of product. When the demand is low our company will need to reduce our headcount in order to stay on top of the game. Conclusion In microeconomics the supply and demand relies on both the competitors and the cost. At the point in which the bidding is done is referred to as the equilibrium. Macroeconomics showed us that when the jobs and population were increased the increase or decrease on the apartments occurs. The equilibrium is higher than it was before and therefore the number of apartments that were demanded and supplied increased as well. The price elasticity of demand affects a consumerââ¬â¢s purchasing and the firmââ¬â¢s pricing strategy when the prices for apartments were lower and the demand was higher. Because of this the prices were increased due to the demand of apartments needed. However, because the prices of the apartments increased the demand for apartments decreased or stayed the same over a short period of time. It seems to me that supply and demand is sort of like dealing with the stock market. When the demand is great you increase the prices to make big profits, however when the demand is lowered than the prices decrease to make sure that the company will come out at least even in the end. Affirmative Action Programs Should Not Be Successful
The phrase, If I had only been black I would have gotten into my first-choice collegeâ⬠has been heard recently to explain some of the white peopleââ¬â¢s view on the topic of affirmative action in educational institutions (quoted in Wise, 2014). By first glance the programs seem as if they are favoring every race besides white because by the looks of it, it is giving the upper hand to every other group. However, by using some of the examples Tim Wise talks about in his article, ââ¬Å"Whites Swim in Racial Preferenceâ⬠readers are able to see that the laws are only in place to help level the playing field for all races. Affirmative action programs are not in place to give an advantage to any single racial group but are there to help in eliminating racial profiling when applying for a job or going to college. His idea that whites are just swimming in the privileges like fishes swimming in water, totally unaware that itââ¬â¢s there, is a prime example of why Affirmative Action programs cannot be successful while the white privileges are still existing. According to CivilRights.org, affirmative action programs are meant to, ââ¬Å"break down barriers, both visible and invisible, to level the playing field, and to make sure everyone is given an equal breakâ⬠(The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, 2014).
